1. The Origin of the 'Black Swan' Term: The Collapse of Absolute Belief
Until the Australian continent was discovered in the 17th century, Europeans in the Old World firmly believed that "all swans are white." Because millions of swans they had observed over millennia were all white, this was considered a statistically and empirically proven 'absolute truth'.

Taleb's core practical solutions for an antifragile portfolio are securing the 'Barbell Strategy' and 'Convexity'.
① The Essence of the Barbell Strategy
Like a barbell lifted by a weightlifter, the barbell strategy is a strategy of extreme dualization that completely excludes clumsy 'Medium Risk' assets and constructs a portfolio solely with assets at both extremes.
- The Trap of Medium Risk: Traditional portfolio theory recommends diversifying investments into assets with moderate returns and moderate risks. However, Taleb points out that when a Black Swan occurs, these 'medium risk' assets reveal their Hidden Risk and are destroyed most fatally.
- Ultra-Safe Assets (Approx. 85~90%): The absolute majority of assets are placed in 'extreme safe assets' (e.g., ultra-short-term government bonds, deposits, cash) where the possibility of principal loss converges to zero. This acts to 'completely close off the downside (Downside Protection)' so that you do not go bankrupt no matter what form of macroeconomic Black Swan strikes.
- Ultra-High-Risk Assets (Approx. 10~15%): The remaining small minority of assets are placed in 'extreme risk assets' (e.g., out-of-the-money options, startup venture investments, innovative deep tech) where the maximum loss upon failure is limited to the principal (1x), but the profit upon success reaches tens or hundreds of times.
This 90 to 10 ratio creates a perfect structure where, when a Black Swan occurs, the safe assets (90%) guarantee the survival of the portfolio, and the risky assets (10%) feed on extreme volatility to generate exponential returns. In the worst-case scenario, even if the 10% risky assets become worthless paper, the total portfolio loss is strictly limited to 10%.
